What is your book about?

The Badass Girl’s Guide: Uncommon Strategies to Outwit Predators is the one book criminal predators don’t want you to read. Filled with critical information about how to empower yourself to keep from becoming a crime statistic, this definitive, comprehensive guide contains facts and strategies not found in other personal security books.

From tips on how to “fail” the predator interview and avoid being targeted, to instructions on using your personal bodily “weapons” to defend yourself in a confrontation, CJ Scarlet offers everything you need to know to stay safe, fight if you must, and navigate the criminal justice process if the worst happens.

If you read just one book on personal safety and self-defense in your lifetime, The Badass Girl’s Guide: Uncommon Strategies to Outwit Predators is the one for you!

What inspired you to write your book?

As a criminal justice expert and victim advocate, I worked with victims of crime for 30 years and became frustrated by dealing with crime and violence AFTER they occurred. I wanted to do something that would help people avoid being victimized at all. As a trained writer, I decided that a book would be the best vehicle to share my knowledge and experience with the public.

Can you describe your writing process?  I don’t work on a schedule. When I have time to write, I sit and write, and the words just flow.

How did you come to do what you’re doing today?

I was trained as a photojournalist when I served in the Marine Corps, which provided me with solid writing skills. When I got out of the military, I became a victim advocate, running a child advocacy center for abused children and serving as Director of Victims Issues for the NC Attorney General’s Office.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Wake up around 8 a.m., set my intentions for the day, drink a smoothie, respond to emails, go through my “to do” list one item at a time, write (if that’s on my agenda), stop work around 5 :30 p.m. Often, when I’m in full writing mode, I’ll write deep into the night and lose an entire night’s sleep.

What do you most enjoy about what you do?

I most enjoy having the flexibility to do what I want, when I want it. I’ve been in the entrepreneurial wild so long that I’ve gone feral and could never work for anyone else ever again!

Are there any people and/or books that have inspired you along your journey?

I am a voracious reader and often devour 3 to 4 books in a week. On the spiritual side, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, Steven Levine, Pema Chodron, and Marianne Williamson have all been great influencers. On the nonfiction side, I love Stephen Pinker, Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, and a new book on marketing and branding by Pia Silva that rocked my world, entitled Badass Your Brand.

Can you share something that people may be surprised to learn about you?CJ Scarlet

Along with being a U.S. Marine, I was a roller skating carhop, a forest firefighter, a lifeguard, a florist, a landscaper, and a technical writer. I dated one of the Iranian hostages (also a Marine) and I see dead people (just kidding about that last part, lol).

What’s next for you?

I’m now creating destination retreats for powerful professional women to help them identify and release anything that is keeping them from “having it all,” as well as offering them individual and group coaching to help them achieve this.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I think writers rock and am honored to be included among you!
